This is about an OER textbook I author with student content and open pedagogy.
I teach on a minority-majority campus. The majority of students are Latinx, then African American. Asian American and Caucasian students make up the rest. Students research topics of their choosing or come at historical events from their particular angle and in doing so my students produce content for the book that is as diverse and inclusive as themselves. In addition, as I use that textbook in my courses, students report they prefer reading the words of fellow students over for-profit authors. Students also edit, add, and update student content. Peer learning is a major aspect of this project I believe.
I will discuss the issue of permission.
We will examine the benefit of engaging students in the process. What I taught them prior to authoring? What are the big issues or needs for support in working with students in such a project and in such a manner?
By attending this session, attendees will be able to:- Include student content in their own OER
- Understand the results of a diverse student population on student content
- Assign diverse coursework as group assignments
- Identify why students of color tend to prefer OER with student content (in my OER textbook as a case study)
