From a social justice perspective, open education is at an inflection point. Lambert's (2018) analysis of open education through the social justice principles of redistributive, recognitive, and representational justice emphasizes the need for intentional, rather than implied equity in open education. Open educational practices provide an opportunity to disrupt hegemonic knowledge by centering students' voices through equity pedagogy. The question remains: In what ways are educators ensuring equity in open education practices (OEP)?
In late 2022, a special issue of the Journal for Multicultural Education will be released in response to this question. The special issue centers equity pedagogy as a lens to examine how open educators achieve recognitive and representational forms of social justice through OEP. In this panel presentation, authors of articles from the special issue will showcase their work and engage in discussion with each other and the audience to provide practical advice on implementing equity-focused OEP in a variety of contexts, from preschool to higher education to professional learning. The purpose of this panel is to share practical applications of OEP as highlighted in a special issue of the Journal for Multicultural Education. Attendees will walk away with pedagogical tools for creating equitable classrooms through OEP, as well as research results they can use to advocate for OEP use in their schools and classrooms.
By attending this session, attendees will be able to:- Understand the intersections of open educational practices (OEP) and equity pedagogy
- Envision applications of equity pedagogy in an open context across a variety of settings
- Consider practical applications of OEP in which students are co-constructors of knowledge to prioritize non-dominant perspectives
